講題: The Pragmatics of Humor

In this lecture the arguments pro and con the view of humor as a violation of the Principle of Cooperation (Paul Grice) are examined. The standard arguments against the violation view are examined and rejected. The possibility of the existence of different cooperative principles, including one for humor, is also rejected.

The Prosody of Humor

In this paper I am interested in particular on the relationship between the salient structural parts of the humorous narratives and their prosodic markers, if any. There exists a folk-theory of the prosody of joke delivery (performance), primarily codified in practical manuals for would-be stand up comedians and other humorous performers. This folk theory has had some influence on the few academic treatments of the subject. The findings in Pickering and Attardo (forth.) are therefore particularly significant insofar as they seem to contradict most of the folk theory of joke performance, and can be summed up as follows:

There is no significant pause before the punch line of jokes. Punch lines are uttered with significantly lower volume peaks than the introductory text of the joke and in fact even at a significantly lower volume than the text immediately preceding the punch line. Punch lines are uttered with a speech rate that is significantly slower than the speech rate in the body of the narrative. Punch lines have significantly lower pitch peaks than the rest of the joke text. No significant differences were found between the prepared jokes and the improvised jokes. About 50% of jokes were performed with some sort of “humor” marker within or near the punch line (laughter pulses, smiling voice, smiles, etc.).

We conclude that contrary to the folk theory of humor performance and to the previous treatments of joke performance, punch lines are not prosodically salient and are not signaled by increased pauses. From a prosodic point of view, punch lines are simply the final part of the text and therefore are performed at a lower volume and pitch, as predicted by pitch declination. However, the humorous nature of the text is cued by a number of markers (smiling, smiling voice, laughter pulses) which help “frame” the narrative as humorous, but do not signal effectively the punch line.

An Overview of the Linguistics of Humor

In this lecture a brief overview of the various fields of the linguistics of humor will be presented. We will review recent scholarship on the linguistics and sociolinguistics of humor, seeking to highlight connections and interplay with other areas of study (such as psycholinguistics, sociology, etc.).

Analyzing Longer Humorous Texts

This lecture is a seminar on the analysis of humorous texts of all kinds (short stories, poems, conversations, film, etc.) using the tools of the GTVH. Emphasis is put on practical techniques and applications, such as how to identify the script oppositions and how to classify them, how to analyze the data, and how to present them.

Metaphors and humor

The central issue of any account of humorous metaphors is to answer the question of why some metaphors are humorous and some are not. Most accounts of humorous metaphors rely on variants of the “distance theory” (Fonagy 1982, Morrissey 1989, Pollio 1996) which essentially consists in postulating a threshold of “semantic distance” beyond which the linkage between the two domains in the metaphorical construal becomes “stretched” and is therefore perceived as humorous. The most obvious problem for the distance theory is that no precise (or even approximate) quantification of the threshold exists. In this paper I will present an alternative (but not necessarily antagonistic) approach grounded in the most recent developments of humor research within cognitive linguistics and the incongruity/resolution theory of humor.

The first step of the analysis is to problematize the very concept of humorous metaphor. Analysis of a small corpus of “humorous metaphors” collected from web pages and press reports shows that “humorous metaphors” is an umbrella term covering at least three completely different phenomena: metaphors that are funny in and of themselves metaphors that describe something that is inherently funny (“hog on ice”) failed metaphors (metaphors that are involuntarily funny, or that are produced to pretend to be involuntarily funny) Among the “failed metaphors” we can further distinguish several categories: un-metaphors (things that are exactly alike or completely different) mixed metaphors overdone metaphors.
